Shonda Rhimes was born as Shonda Lynn Rhimes on 13th January, 1970 at Chicago, Illinois, United States. She is an American by nationality and ethnicity wise, she is an African American. Her birth sign is Capricorn. She is the daughter of daughter of Vera P. (Cain) and Ilee Rhimes, Jr.  Her father was a university administrator at University of Southern California and her mother is a college professor. She grew up with her two older brothers and three older sisters at University Park, Illinois.
She had an interest in story telling from a young age and she spent her time as a hospital volunteer during her high school days. She studied at the Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, Illinois. Then she joined Dartmouth College from where she graduated in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in English and film studies. She joined the Black Underground Theater Association when she was at Dartmouth.
 Rhimes also wrote for the college newspaper during that time. After that she came to  San Francisco to work at  McCann Erickson. Then she went to Los Angeles to study Screenwriting at  University of Southern California. During that time, she got hired as an intern by  Debra Martin Chase. She got to her turning point when she was hired by Denzel Washington's production company named Mundy Lane Entertainment. Shonda Rhimes worked as an office administrator and counselor after she finished her college.In 1995, She got an opportunity to enter the film industry by working as the research director of the movie Hank Aaron: Chasing the Dream. After 3 years, in 1998 she wrote and directed a movie named Blossoms and Veils. She worked on a couple of short movies during that time.
In 1999, she was hired to co-write the hit movie, Introducing Dorothy Dandridge and then the
script was purchased by New Line Cinema. She also wrote Crossroads in 2001, which was a debut film of Britney Spears. The movie earned over $60 million at the box office around the world. After that, she worked with star Julie Andrews to work on the Disney’s sequel movie, Princess Diaries.
